ITIN Application
ITIN Application Services in Massachusetts
If you need to file a U.S. tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security number, you need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN. Applying for one can be confusing: the IRS form is detailed, the documentation rules are strict, and a small mistake can get your application rejected or your original documents lost in the mail. TBS Tax Services makes the ITIN process straightforward. We guide you through every step, help you prepare your application correctly, and file it alongside your tax return so everything is handled together.
Serving the immigrant community in Stoughton, Hyannis, and across Massachusetts for over 20 years, our bilingual team understands exactly what families need to get their ITIN without unnecessary delays or stress.
What Is an ITIN?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit tax processing number issued by the IRS to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number. ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status, because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code. An ITIN is used strictly for federal tax reporting. It does not authorize you to work in the United States, does not provide Social Security benefits, and does not change your immigration status.
Who Needs to Apply for an ITIN?
You generally need an ITIN if you have a U.S. tax filing or reporting requirement but do not qualify for a Social Security number. This commonly includes nonresident individuals required to file a U.S. return, resident individuals filing a U.S. return based on days present in the country, and spouses or dependents of U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or nonresident visa holders. If you are unsure whether you need one, we review your situation and confirm whether applying is the right step.
How Do I Apply for an ITIN?
To apply, you must complete IRS Form W-7 and submit it along with your federal tax return and original documents (or certified copies) that prove your identity and foreign status. A valid passport is the single document that can satisfy both requirements on its own. Once submitted, the IRS reviews your application and, if everything is in order, assigns your ITIN and processes your tax return. Because the process has specific requirements at each step, having an experienced preparer handle it greatly reduces the risk of rejection. We prepare your Form W-7, confirm your documentation, and submit everything properly the first time.
How Long Does It Take to Get an ITIN?
The IRS generally takes about 7 weeks to notify you of your ITIN status. During peak tax season (mid-January through the end of April) or if you apply from overseas, it can take 9 to 11 weeks. Because processing takes time and your original documents may be involved, it is important to apply correctly and early. We help you plan the timing so your ITIN and tax return are processed as smoothly as possible.
Do I Need to Renew My ITIN?
Yes, ITINs can expire. An ITIN that has not been used on a federal tax return for three consecutive years will expire, as will certain older ITINs on an IRS schedule. If your ITIN is expired and you need to file, you must renew it, otherwise your return may be delayed and you could lose eligibility for certain tax credits until the renewal is complete. We determine whether your ITIN needs renewal and handle the renewal application for you.
ITIN FAQ
Can I get an ITIN without filing a tax return?
In most cases, no. An ITIN application must generally be submitted together with a federal tax return, because the ITIN exists for tax reporting purposes. There are limited exceptions for certain people who meet specific reporting requirements, and we help you determine which applies.
Will applying for an ITIN affect my immigration status?
An ITIN is strictly a tax processing number. It does not grant legal status, work authorization, or immigration benefits, and it is not the same as a Social Security number. It simply allows you to comply with U.S. tax law.
Do I have to mail in my passport and original documents?
The IRS requires original documents or certified copies to verify your identity and foreign status. There are ways to reduce the risk of mailing valuable originals, and we advise you on the safest approach for your documents during your appointment.
What happens if my ITIN application is rejected?
If the IRS needs more information, they send a CP566 notice; if the application is rejected, they send a CP567 notice and you must resubmit. Applications are commonly rejected for incomplete forms or documentation errors, which having us prepare your application greatly reduces.
Can my whole family apply for ITINs at once?
Yes. Each person applying needs their own completed Form W-7 and supporting documents. We can prepare applications for you, your spouse, and your dependents together.
Can you help me in Portuguese or Spanish?
Yes. Our bilingual team guides you through the entire ITIN process in the language you are most comfortable with.
